The City of Austin is a world class city and is seeking a progressive, visionary medical doctor/public health professional to serve as the Medical Director for Austin Public Health and Health Authority for Austin and Travis County.

The Medical Director/Health Authority reports to the Director of Austin Public Health and, by statute, is responsible for clinical oversight of medically related services rendered by more than 300 licensed health department professionals. Please note the following about this highly responsible position:
- The Medical Director/Health Authority must possess knowledge of public health preparedness and response and will collaborate with internal and external partners on current and emerging public health issues, ensuring that the Greater Austin area is prepared, protected, and informed on important public health matters. Partners include the Travis County Medical Society, neighboring county health authorities, public safety leaders, elected and appointed leaders in the City of Austin and Travis County and partners at the local and regional medical schools. This position is a key member of the City’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness efforts.
- The Medical Director/Health Authority must possess well developed communication skills and provide leadership in advising local physicians and the medical community on communicable diseases and other public health concerns. The Medical Director/Health Authority is the face of all public health issues and must present an informed and trusting presence in the media.
- The Medical Director/Health Authority ensures that all medically related activities in the department are performed in accordance with the applicable license, regulatory, and accreditation standards, including consistent quality assurance standards.
- The Medical Director/Health Authority must be an ethical, collaborative servant leader who is skilled at building relationships and energized by working cross functionally with the City of Austin and a diverse, multi-cultural group of internal and external stakeholders. The Medical Director must possess and exhibit cultural competency and cultural humility and be committed to developing and maintaining the public’s trust.
Candidates must be licensed to practice medicine in Texas and hold a current Department of Public Safety registration certificate for controlled substances. Candidates must have graduated with a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from a college or university accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and possess a board-certified specialty. Candidates will ideally possess a master’s degree in Public Health or related field and are expected to have six years’ experience in public health or related field, of which four years were in a progressively responsible supervisory/management/leadership capacity.
The annual salary range for the Medical Director/Health Authority is $185,000 – $195,000 +/- DOQ. Placement within the approved salary range will be dependent upon career experience and qualifications. This position is considered open until filled.
